When Blogs Are Worth It

The funny thing about blogs, whether we realize it or not, is that who we are and what we're made of  shines through. Over time the reader really does get to know the blogger and form opinions which do lead to book buying decisions. There are authors whose books I will never read after reading their blogs and conversely authors who I never would have read otherwise who I go out of my way to support their fiction because of what I've discovered about them through their blogging.

Barry Eisler's blog THE HEART OF THE MATTER is consistently interesting and thought provoking.
One  reason is that he reasons things out and uses his forum to raise questions not just make noise.

Independents, Chains, and Drive-By Signings, his most recent post, is well worth reading because it's a perfect example of how authors can use the medium to show what they're made of and because it's on subject that matters to authors and publishers and affects our business.

The entry in question is composed of an email exchange between Barry and an independent bookseller and the issues it brings up which Barry elucidates so well. One of the more shocking things to me is the blatant and not very well veiled threats the bookseller makes.

I've mentioned it here before - but if you are a fan of the thriller genre  - Barry is a standout. He's one of the very few  who  writes character driven thrillers that are never short on action.  His protagonist, John Rain is as much a philosopher as he is a hired assassin. And Barry's newest is on my summer reading list. Reviewers are saying it's his best yet.

Summer reading lists will continue next week, BTW. And don't forget to check out this week's Backstories.  Todays by the very talented Jane Cleland whose myster, Consigned to Death, an Antiques Roadshow, is making quite a splash.

Thank you for sending me to that great blog, and that intriguing conversation between Barry and the bookseller. Much to ponder. As a novelist with a new book out, I am grateful to the independents who hand sell and know my work, and steer book groups toward my novels, but I am also aware that many people buy books in chains. I need that business too. It is a fine balancing act, and some wide-awake diplomacy is clearly called for in the way we talk about what we do (even how we schedule a day when touring) just as much as it is called for in the actual choices we all make.
