David J. Montgomery's Summer Reading List
Summer
is always a great time of year for my reading list, as publishers tend to
release the kinds of books I love during this season: a lot of big, fun,
splashy, page-turning reads. There are quite a few books that I'm looking
forward to, some of which are already starting to trickle in, but these
are the ones that are currently at the top of my list.
The Last Assassin by Barry Eisler
Eisler's work just keeps getting better, and his latest promises to be another winner. The John Rain series is one of the best things going in the thriller world today.

No Good Deeds by Laura Lippman
Lippman's last three books have been so good that it's hard to believe that she can keep up the trend. But if anyone can do it, it's her.

The Night Gardener by George Pelecanos
For several years now, Pelecanos has been writing crime fiction of the highest order. The buzz on The Night Gardener is that it's one of his best yet, so I can't wait to find out.

The Venus Fix by M.J. Rose
I don't often read erotic thrillers, but when they're this good, I can't pass 'em up. If the new Morgan Snow book is anything like The Delilah Complex, then we're really in for a treat.

The
fifth book that I'm looking forward to this summer is one that I don't even
know about yet. It's a book that will come along with no hype and little
publicity. It'll be the kind of book that could easily fall through the cracks,
but instead grabs my attention and knocks my socks off. Those are my favorite
books of all.
I have the same fifth book, David, so I know exactly what you mean. You're holding the spot for the one that will surprise you. How wonderful. And how very well put!

I would never want to deny you the serendipitous pleasure of stumbling over the perfect summer read. But if you happen to see a copy of James Lee Burke's "Pegasus Descending" you might pick it up. I've been blown away by it. (And, David, it has NO CATS.)

Can you believe I've never read James Lee Burke? Sacrilege, I know.
Speaking of cats...for those who enjoy the feline mysteries, Clea Simon's Cattery Row is nicely done. Not my normal kind of book, but she does it well.

Thanks, David. But you really should pick up a JL Burke. He's a master and perfect for a steamy day.
