Art/Business - Part 2

On Writing is an art. Publishing is a business. What is the number 1 business rule you want authors or publishers to rethink, or to understand better. Or what is the rule you feel is most misunderstood.

In the best of all possible worlds, book publishing is a partnership between author, agent, publisher and bookseller.   In order to be smart for the book, this team needs to be willing to risk new tactics to grab the public’s attention, while holding on to some traditional, tried-and-true golden rules.  Each member of the team should be willing to do a degree of heavy lifting; they should also flex their imaginations to find the one thing that has been overlooked or forgotten.  This is a daunting obligation, given the number of new books we launch into the world every year.

Our common goal: to find the magic.  There is nothing more satisfying in this business than to find the ingredients that make a book a success; we are obligated to tap into our past experience (and, hopefully, some newfound wisdom) to nail the readership for each book. Sometimes we do it well; often we simply follow a playbook and reap modest or disappointing results.

But in the cases where the magic formula is found we get to experience the heady pleasure of seeing a book actually reach the predicted audience—and beyond.  We see firsthand the fruits of our labors: that books can make headlines; spark important discussion and new thought; be terrifically entertaining; bring hope, comfort and courage; even change lives.   To be part of that creative process is why we do it.
