On Tour

Tour report #1. James Frey. Lies. Books.

I’m not going to keep a traditional diary on this tour but I will post some notes regarding tours in general as marketing vehicles after it’s all over and I can be coherent.

But some items of curiosity while I’m on the road.

On three planes so far, scanning the aisles walking to and from the bathroom I counted every time and more people were listening to iPods than reading by 2 to 3.

Of those reading more people were reading mysteries/suspense than any other genre including non fiction.

Only one person was reading James Frey. No was reading The DaVinci Code – first time that’s happened since it came out. I always see at least one reader with it.

That I can remember, this time I spotted one Steve Berry, one Lee Child, one Karen Slaughter and one Janet Evanovich and one John Lescroart

Bookstores on tours overwhelm me. Its one thing to go into one store at a time every few weeks. But to do five stores a days for days – I get freaked out. There are so many books.

I keep saying this but I wish everyone in publishing would go to 40 stores in a week. Absorb. Soak in. Notice what you notice, what you don’t.

It all humbles me. I want to drop to my knees and thank the muses and the gods that I am even published at all when I see how many books there are. (BEA makes me feel like this too.)

Booksellers, bookstore owners, store managers are amazing. They can’t be thanked enough.

So are fans.

Thank goodness for fans.

The gossip. Everyone is talking about Frey.

So.

Since the fiction in non fiction is all the rage I’m having some fun James Frey style on this tour. In the spirit of full disclosure, in talking about The Delilah Complex, I’m focusing on the non-fiction in my fiction. More on how this goes and the contest I’m running as the week goes by.

And on the Frey subject, if you want to read a great essay on the debacle, read critic David J. Montgomery’s blog

Don’t forget, here’s where I’ll be for the rest of this week:
• 01.16 M is for Mystery San Mateo, CA, 7:00 pm
• 01.17 Third Place Books Lake Forest Park, WA, 7:00 pm
• 01.19 Murder by the Book Denver, CO, 5:00 pm
• 01.19 High Crimes Boulder, CO, 7:00 pm
• 01.20 Murder on the Beach Boca Raton, FL, 7:00 pm
